Wartime Nurses to Share Personal Memories of Caring for Injured Battlefront Troops

Angels of the Battlefield _ Flyer.jpg

Special program to feature emotional accounts from U.S. conflicts spanning 60 years,
will examine critical medical improvements developed during that time

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (March 3, 2016) – On March 31, at 7 p.m. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum will honor the invaluable role of wartime nurses with Angels of the Battlefield: The Unsung Heroes – a program featuring the first-hand accounts of military nurses who cared for troops injured on the frontlines. ]

A panel of nurses, including three who served in the Vietnam War, will share personal stories of how their care and support helped make a difference between life and death. They’ll also discuss the emotional impact suffered by witnessing the personal and devastating costs of war.

A multi-media presentation will include Cathy Drake, a nurse who was assigned to two MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) units during the Korean War. Drake and her husband Dale, an anesthesiologist while in Korea, are well-known for helping to inspire the book MASH: A Novel about Three Army Doctors, written by Richard Hooker. The book was later adapted into a hit movie and television series. In the presentation, Drake will explain to the audience what it was like working in a stressful, crowded MASH operating room.

“During times of war, our nurses are considered the angels of the battlefield – our unsung heroes,” said Mac Burdette, executive director of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. “We want to celebrate these men and women and give the community a chance to hear their personal stories. We also want to discuss the improvements in triage made over the years and how they have saved lives, specifically the use of helicopters that could quickly provide transport between the frontlines and surgical units.”

The Angels of the Battlefield symposium will be held March 31 at 7 p.m. inside the climate-controlled Smokey Stover Theater aboard the USS YORKTOWN. Admission and parking are both free. The event is part of Patriots Point’s “Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things” education series.

About Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

Business Outreach Meeting Takes Town Officials to Blackbeard’s Cove

BBC1.JPG

By Martine Wolfe-Miller, Mount Pleasant Communications Officer

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (August 31, 2015) – The Town of Mount Pleasant recently hosted a business outreach meeting at Blackbeard’s Cove, 3255 Hwy. 17 N. Mount Pleasant Councilmembers Mark Smith, Elton Carrier, and Ken Glasson, along with Town Administrator Eric DeMoura, Assistant Town Administrator Katherine Hendricks and Government Outreach Officer Lauren Sims met with Christi Dodson, Blackbeard’s Cove Director of Sales and Marketing.

“The meetings are informal roundtable discussions where business owners and their staff have an opportunity to discuss topics important to them with their elected officials. The business outreach meetings, spearheaded by the Economic Development Committee are a great way to connect with local businesses, exchange information, understand the challenges and opportunities that our local businesses face, and strengthen community relationships,” commented Councilman Smith.

The group was offered a tour of the facility’s newest ventures including significant renovations. Blackbeard’s Cove recently completed the construction of four meeting rooms that can be reserved for parties, team-building activities, and corporate events. Each room is outfitted with televisions and AV equipment. The park recently began hosting Character Dinners the third Saturday of each month. The dinners are held from 6 to 9 p.m., adults are free and children are $29.99 per child (advance reservations are required). More information can be obtained online at http://blackbeardscove.net.

The Business Outreach Meetings are part of the town wide Government Outreach and Engagement Strategy. The Government Outreach Office works with various Town departments, citizens, neighborhood associations, civic groups, faith organizations, business leaders, and non-profit entities to create community-wide conversations and foster collaborative partnerships that will lead to strong community relationships, a shared common identity, and a more engaged community.

For more information on the Government Outreach Office and how to request a speaker for any civic group, please contact Lauren Sims at lsims@tompsc.com.
