New Toddler Playground Kicks off Improvements at Memorial Waterfront Park

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (February 10, 2017) -
Construction will begin shortly for a new toddler playground to complement the existing playground at Memorial Waterfront Park. Designed to resemble the deck of the U.S.S. Yorktown, a national landmark located at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, the project will kick off a series of capital improvements to one of the most beloved parks in the region. The playground addition is expected to be completed for the Blessing of the Fleet celebrations on April 30. The non-playground portions of this project will be bid out in the next two weeks and take 120 days to complete.

More shade structures, an updated security system, a Wi-Fi cloud, and an improved electrical system will also be implemented to enhance park activities and special events. The commemorative bricks lining the approaches to the memorial garden will be removed. The names of veterans will be etched on pavers surrounding the statue for easier maintenance and preservation.

Wayfinding signage is also planned: the ability for pedestrians and motorists to find their way in Mount Pleasant and access kiosks. Wayfinding signs will be installed on Coleman Boulevard and at Memorial Waterfront Park.

“We are excited about the upgrades to the park, including of our new wayfinding signs,” said Assistant Town Administrator and Memorial Waterfront Park project manager Katherine Hendricks. “We plan to incorporate our brand and logo on signage to direct and welcome residents and visitors to our public areas. The signs are inspired by the iconic shrimping fleet of Mount Pleasant and showcase the history of our town. They meet all specifications from the South Carolina Department of Transportation.”

About the Capital Improvement Plan

The Capital Improvement Plan is a five-year plan updated annually. Projects are ranked by Council and funding plans are set in place and ultimately approved with each new fiscal year. As most projects tend to span multiple years, funding remains active and is carried forward to each new budget until a project is completed. The Town of Mount Pleasant is committed to funding major transportation and stormwater infrastructure improvements along with the continued effort to maintain Town facilities and other assets to create a more sustainable community for citizens.
