Hazardous Materials
Training & Maintenance

The department trains all emergency response personnel to the Hazardous Materials Operations level (as a minimum) in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120. A core group of personnel have been trained to the Hazardous Materials Technician level.

The department maintains a hazardous materials apparatus, HazMat 502, supplied with a standard complement of equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE), air monitoring devices, decontamination equipment, leak containment/mitigation, and absorbent materials. HazMat 502 is assigned to Station 2, which specializes in training for response to hazardous materials incidents.

This was a strategic decision based on the proximity of Station 2 to the Wando Welch Terminal of the State Ports Authority (SPA), which is the most significant threat in regard to hazardous materials.

Equipment
The department has received sophisticated air monitoring equipment from the Charleston County Hazardous Materials Division (CCHMD) including a PID / FID (photo-ionization detector / flame ionization detector), a multi-gas air monitoring meter, an electronic pH detector, radiation detection devices, and colorimetric tubes. This has supplemented the department's equipment and increased its response capabilities.
