Swim Lessons

The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department offers all different levels of swim lessons.
Swim lesson guidelines:

All ages listed below are only used as guide lines. Participants should be placed accordingly to ability.

If your child cannot meet the minimum requirements for a class Mt. Pleasant reserves the right to move your child to a different level.

  • Parent-tot: 6 months - 3 years
  • Pre-school: 3-4years ONLY
  • Learn to swim level 1: Basic Water Skills - Beginning swimmer ages 5 and above ONLY
  • Learn to swim level 2: Fundamental Skills - Advanced beginning swimmer
  • Learn to swim level 3: Stroke Development - Intermediate swimmer    
  • Learn to swim level 4: Stroke Improvement - Advanced swimmer
  • Learn to swim level 5: Stroke Refinement - Advanced swimmer

Red Cross Classes
American Red Cross Classes
The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department has offered a wide range of American Red Cross certification classes since 1992.For information visit www.redcross.org or for local information. For all American Red Cross materials visit www.shopstaywell.com.

Lifeguard Review
This 10 hour course is intended for individuals that need to renew their American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. All skills and written test material (including: Lifeguarding, CPR, AED and First Aid) will be tested in a challenge format, with limited review provided. Newly revised skills will be reviewed before testing. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers certificates valid for two years.

To be eligible for the review course, participants must have successfully completed an American Red Cross Lifeguarding course within the last 4 years and a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer course within the last 2 years. You must show proof of certifications on the first day of class. Individuals that do not have eligible certificates may not participate in the review course. They may only participate in a full course. Min. 6 Max 10

Course Prerequisites (will be tested the first class).
-15 years or older complete 300 yd swim using front crawl and breaststroke.
-Recover and swim 25 yards with 10-lb. object (goggles may not be used in this event)
-Treading water using only the legs for 2 minutes.

Safe Sitter
Safe Sitter is a national non-profit organization devoted to preparing young adolescents for the responsibility of nurturing and protecting children. This is a one day class for ages 11 - 14. They will learn babysitting as a business, success on the job, child care essentials, injury management and care of a chocking child. Materials will be supplied. Students should bring their own lunch. For more information please contact the R.L. Jones Center at 884-2528.

Water Aerobics Classes
We offer a variety of water aerobic classes at both R.L. Jones Center and Park West Pool. below are all the classes that we offer. Come and try any of our classes FREE the first time you visit!!

Water Aerobics-R.L. Jones Pool
All ongoing classes & All ages and fitness levels welcome.
$50 resident/$80 non-resident for a pass that is good for 10 classes and has to be used within 6 months of being issued

Advanced Water Fitness
This challenging workout encourages you to reach your ultimate performance goals. Class includes deep water running, water sprints, interval training and much more. This variety allows you to increase cardiovascular power, burn fat and calories, while conditioning the body.

ARTHRITIS EXERCISE
Participants are guided through a series of movements geared to reduce the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. Swimming skills not required.

Water Aerobics
Shallow water routines increase cardiovascular endurance while deep water routines strengthen muscles and improve coordination. This class will help you achieve a healthier lifestyle and can help decrease the stress of everyday living.

Power Aquatics
Experience a high intensity water workout that will burn plenty of calories and give your body tone and definition. Finning for the ultimate leg work out every Wednesday.
Mon/Wed/Fri 10:00-11:00 a.m.

Calorie Burners AM
Improvements in participants cardiovascular stamina, flexibility and muscle toning are the primary goals of this class. Swimming skills not required.

Aquatic Personal Training/Rehabilitation
We will utilize the water to create a balanced and enjoyable workout just for you. Excellent for cross training and/or rehabilitation.
$25 per person for 30 minute session
$50 per person for 1 hour session

All ongoing classes & All ages and fitness levels welcome.

Hydropower
Hydropower is a fun and challenging water aerobic fitness program that gives all participants the opportunity to achieve their fitness goals. This aquatic fitness class includes mostly shallow water exercises designed for any level of conditioning, from rehabilitation to sports conditioning. All fitness levels welcome.

Morning Oxygen Water Fitness Group
All deep water exercising (buoyancy belts & water equipment provided), 50% core, 50% cardio, 100% arm work & 100% fun! No stressful impact on joints & bones but receive beneficial resistance strength training for muscles & bones from water resistance.

MPRD Summer Swim Team
Summer Swim League
REGISTRATION: MARCH 7 – MAY 13 ($100 residents / $130 non-residents)

The summer swim program is designed for children who love to swim but don’t want the year round commitment of a USA Swimming program. The focus is on teaching children the fundamentals of swimming while enjoying a fun environment. Swimmers have the option of competing in several local swim meets. Parents are required to volunteer for three swim meets. Meets will be held on Wednesdays. The meet schedule will be given out at practice. Max: 100

June 6 - July 16th Tuesdays and Thursdays

Mt. Pleasant Masters Swimming
Mt. Pleasant Masters
The Mt. Pleasant Masters is open to all swimmers and tri-athletes ages 18 and older interested in fitness and/or competitive swimming. Each workout is tailored to individual swimmer’s goals. Competitions are made available through United States Masters Swimming. Emphasis is placed on stroke technique and enjoyment of the sport.
