Deputy Chief

Deputy Chief Tyrone Simmons was born and raised in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He attended James B. Edwards Elementary School, Moultrie Middle School, and Wando High School. He began his career with the Mount Pleasant Police Department, as a Community Service Officer, in April of 1999. In 2002 he became a sworn police officer after completing the 9-week South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, South Carolina.

In March of 2004, Deputy Chief Simmons was transferred to the Criminal Investigations Bureau where he served as a detective for 7 years. In July of 2011, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and became an assistant patrol team supervisor. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in October of 2013 and assumed a leadership role of his own patrol team. In July of 2018, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. As a lieutenant, he was assigned to the Patrol Bureau where he was the Watch Commander for Precinct 2. As Watch Commander, he oversaw 6 patrol sergeants who supervised their own individual patrol teams. He was also the Harbor Patrol Commander and Mobile Field Force Commander.

In July of 2020, He was promoted to the rank of Captain, over the Support Services Bureau, where he oversaw the department’s budget, Training Bureau, Records Management Department, grants procedures, and accreditation. In May of 2021, He was promoted to his current rank of Deputy Chief of Police. In this position he oversees the day-to-day operations of the Operations Bureau, Investigations Bureau, and the Support Services Bureau.

Deputy Chief Simmons has received several awards during his career to include Town Employee of the Month, Community Service Officer of the year, Rookie Officer of the year, Officer of the Year, Detective of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, Fraternal Order of Police Award of Merit, Charleston Battery Hometown Hero award, and the Community Outreach Award.

Deputy Chief Simmons has certificates in Law Enforcement, Crime Scene Investigation, and Corrections through Trident Technical College. He also has an advanced Graduate Certificate in Police Executive Leadership Development through the University of Louisville and an advanced Graduate Certificate in Leadership through Liberty University. He holds an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Trident Technical College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Limestone College, a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice From Columbia College and a Master’s Degree in Executive Leadership from Liberty University. He has completed the FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Development Association Trilogy and is also an honor graduate of the prestigious Administrative Officers Course (139th) at the Southern Police Institute held at the University of Louisville in Louisville Kentucky.

His professional affiliations include the Fraternal Order of Police (Lodge 3), Southern Police Institute Alumni Association, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the South Carolina Police Chiefs Association (SCPCA).
