Trees enhance our Town with natural beauty and provide benefits to our neighborhoods by reducing air pollution; filtering dust; reducing noise; providing cooling shade; preventing soil erosion; improving surface drainage; and minimizing flooding. It is for these reasons that the Town of Mount Pleasant promotes the protection of existing trees and for the replacement and planting of new trees.
The Take Root Program began in May 2021 as a community-wide tree planting initiative to encourage residents to take an active role in beautifying the community. As a successful program, the Town has expanded Take Root to encompass all tree programs, beautification efforts, and related educational programs with a mission to preserve existing canopy and promote new tree canopy. The Take Root program includes:
- Tree Protection Ordinance
- Tree Bank Grant
- Scenic Highways
- Public Planting Projects
- Power Line Undergrounding Program
- Take Root Events
- Education and Outreach
- Partnerships
Take Root Events are a community tree give-a-way initiative designed to encourage residents to take an active role in beautifying our Town and addressing the challenges of growth. Further, the intent is to provide education and to encourage our citizens to plant responsibly. Planning Staff volunteers their time to work at these events throughout the year. To date, the Town has given away over 3,500 trees, a variety of all native species. Take Root Events include the following:
- Farmers Market
- Children’s Day Festival
- Sweetgrass Basket Festival
- Blessing of the Fleet
- Arbor Day Activities
The Town has given away 3,619 seedlings to date from Spring 2021-Spring 2023.
