MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (January 25, 2016) - Join the Tow Town of Mount Pleasant and the Historical Commission as they celebrate Black History Month each Saturday in February.
Black History Month celebrates the many achievements and contributions made by African Americans to the American economic, cultural, spiritual and political development.
Mayor Linda Page recently proclaimed February 2016 as Black History Month in the Town of Mount Pleasant and congratulated the Town of Mount Pleasant Historical Commission for coordinating a community-wide celebration.
The month-long activities will highlight the experiences of local African Americans whose lives are threads woven into the fabric of the community and the nation.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENT LINE UP
Dr. Marlene O’Bryant-Seabrook & the Plantation Singers
The lineup will kick off on February 6 with Dr. Marlene O’Bryant-Seabrook an educator and fiber artist. Her presentation on Gullah designs and quilts will be followed by a spirituals performance by the Plantation Singers at 7 p.m.

Al Miller
The cultural series will be followed by Al Miller, an historian and licensed tour guide. His presentation will center on Mende Funeral Song (Sierra Leone.)

Michael Allen
The Town of Mount Pleasant Historical Commission will also offer a lecture by Michael Allen, U.S. National Park Service. The theme of the event is the Reconstruction Period.

Carolyn “Jabulile” White
The Black History Month cultural programs will conclude with a presentation of Gullah stories from grass-roots Gullah storyteller and historian Carolyn “Jabulile” White.
