MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (June 2, 2016) – Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page has announced the Mayor’s Summit on Disabilities Inclusion in the Workplace to be held at Alhambra Hall June 16 from 7:30am-9:00am. Business leaders are invited to learn how to begin effecting change in the community by hiring the region’s largest untapped workforce solution – those with disabilities.
“We are best as a community when we help those who may have the least,” said Mayor Linda Page. “Mount Pleasant is well positioned to lead the charge on this timely issue. Our economy continues to grow and generate new job opportunities that should be realized by all of our citizens.”
In South Carolina, there are more than 350,000 citizens, ages 18-64, with a disability, more than 250,000 of whom are unemployed.
“Despite the increase in the number of people in South Carolina’s labor force, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities continues to be much higher than for those without a disability,” says Neal Getsinger, South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Commissioner. “Often these individuals just need the opportunity for training and simple accommodations to become valuable members of the workforce.”
This event is the first of its kind in the region and is a collaborative effort between the Town of Mount Pleasant, the South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, US Business Leadership Network, Mount Pleasant Business Association and the East Cooper Hospitality Alliance.
The summit will include a panel of local business leaders experienced in workplace inclusion, as well as an introduction of resources and incentives for businesses to hire those with disabilities. While registration is required for this event, it is free to attend and open to the business community at large, not just those east of the Cooper. More information on the event can be found at http://MtPInclusion2016.eventbrite.com.
