MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (August 12, 2016) – The roundabout at the intersection of Park West Boulevard and Bessemer Road is officially open.
"We are delighted to celebrate completion of the Park West/Bessemer roundabout project,” said Transportation Director Brad Morrison. “This roundabout is the latest in an ambitious list of capital improvement projects. It is an important component of our Long Range Transportation Plan. This new single lane roundabout, with a dedicated right-turn lane onto Bessemer Road, will provide for safer and more effective traffic flow at the intersection. Drivers are urged to be attentive of new driving patterns and obey all traffic laws when approaching a roundabout.”
Roundabout Traffic Tips:
As students return to school next week, the Mount Pleasant Transportation Department wants to remind motorists of easy steps they can take to negotiate roundabouts.
• Slow down as you approach the roundabout and watch for pedestrians in the crosswalk. You must yield to pedestrians who have already legally entered the crosswalk.
• Continue toward the roundabout and look to your left as you near the yield sign and dashed yield line at the entrance to the roundabout. Yield to traffic already in the roundabout. For the approach leg with two lanes (through and right-turn), note that the right-turn lane is not a bypass lane and the motorist must yield to vehicles exiting onto Bessemer Road.
• Once you see a gap in traffic, enter the circle and proceed to your exit. If there is no traffic in the roundabout, you may enter without yielding.
• Look for pedestrians and use your turn signal before you exit. Make sure to stay in your lane as you navigate the roundabout.
The Park West/Bessemer roundabout project was successfully implemented by the Mount Pleasant Transportation Department, Gulfstream Construction and Stantec. Landscaping and lighting will be installed shortly to complete the intersection.
