MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (August 16, 2015) – Today, the Town of Mount Pleasant announced the completion of the Dunes West Bike Lane project. The Transportation and Planning and Development Departments completed the project as part of the comprehensive Mount Pleasant Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan.
“As part of its 2017-2021 Comprehensive Plan, the Town adopted a master bike and pedestrian plan that includes recommended improvements for bike and pedestrian facilities to create connectivity between the Town’s neighborhoods, commercial areas, parks and schools,” said Planning Director Christiane Farrell. “The Master Plan includes a seven-year blueprint for establishing goals and outlining projects that will enhance the Town's bicycle and pedestrian facilities.”
“The Town worked to provide safe and convenient means of travel for pedestrians and cyclists,” said Mount Pleasant Traffic Engineer James Aton. “The new bike lanes along Dunes West Boulevard will improve the bicycle connectivity from Park West Boulevard’s joint use path to S.C. Highway 41, the adjacent shopping center and Rivertowne neighborhood.”
“This project came about through our community roundtable meeting with the Charleston Moves Board,” said Mount Pleasant Transportation Director Brad Morrison. “We are thankful to the organization for providing significant input on the Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan.”
The marked bike lane is four feet wide, with an additional one-foot gutter section. The project cost approximately $9,000 and involved pavement marking and sign placements. It is part of a multi-year Bike and Pedestrian facility capital improvement project.
