MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (November 17, 2016) – Local and state officials joined business leaders to celebrate the National Medal of Honor Museum and to learn more about the immense economic impact this one-of-a-kind attraction will bring to Mount Pleasant.
Retired Marine Corps Gen. James E. Livingston, one of only 76 living Medal of Honor Recipients, led the presentations for what will not only be another first-class attraction at Patriot’s Point, but also a much-needed vessel to preserve the stories of Medal of Honor recipients while elevating the ideals of patriotism, leadership and courage.
“As the only museum of its type in the country, this is an important investment in our community – from an economic standpoint but also from a patriotic standpoint” said Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page. “This will be a world-class tourist attraction and economic engine creating jobs all throughout our state and region.”
A 107,000-square-foot complex, the National Medal of Honor Museum was designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie and will incorporate an auditorium, chapel, galleries and more. The National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation is currently fundraising for this project and accepting tax-deductible donations online.
“We are delighted to gather in unified support of the National Medal of Honor Museum to learn more and collaborate to propel this project forward. Not only will this incomparable project educate our population and honor our heroes, it will also be a massive economic driver for Mount Pleasant and our region,” said Mount Pleasant Town Council Economic Development Chairman, Mark Smith. “The museum is expected to generate a $21.3 million annual economic impact and 400 new South Carolina jobs.”
The gathering was hosted at the Old Village Post House in partnership with Hall Hospitality and the Town of Mount Pleasant’s Economic Development Committee. To learn more about the museum from Medal recipients, watch the Flyover Video Virtual Tour here.
