MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (December 30, 2016) – Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page and the Mount Pleasant Culture, Arts & Pride Commission recently installed the final art piece for the 2016 Mayor’s Office Art Program, which is dedicated to supporting the work of local artists.

Marie Dovre Gosnell is displaying Heron’s Nest, a beautiful acrylic rendering of grey herons in marshgrass. The painting will be showcased for residents and visitors of the mayor’s office until February.

“Mount Pleasant has such a rich artistic community and I truly enjoying shining a light on our cultural heritage through this program,” said Mayor Page. “Mrs. Gosnell is a gifted artist and I am thrilled to be able to admire her herons while working and also to show them off to visitors in my office.”

Gosnell is a retired speech therapist originally from Charleston who moved back to the Lowcountry two years ago to be closer to her family in Mount Pleasant.

Nature is Gosnell’s primary inspiration and though she prefers working with watercolors, she has recently finished some experimental pieces using leaves, moss and found objects.

“Art is an important expression of our culture and here the environment is the root of that culture,” said Gosnell. “The marshes, ocean and nature feed so many of our traditions; art is the best way to remind us of those traditions.”

Heron’s Nest is part of Gosnell’s private collection at home.

About the Art in the Mayor’s Office Program

The Town of Mount Pleasant and the Culture, Arts & Pride Commission invites artists to submit photos of completed artwork for a two-month display in the mayor’s office. All entries are juried by Town staff and the Culture, Arts & Pride Commission.
