Posted on: April 21, 2017[ARCHIVED] New Toddler Playground Kicks off Other Improvements at Memorial Waterfront Park

By Martine Wolfe-Miller, Mount Pleasant Communications Manager
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (April 21, 2017) – A ribbon cutting for the new toddler playground at Memorial Waterfront Park will take place at the 30th Annual Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival on April 30. The new facility will complement the existing playground at the park. Designed to resemble the deck of the U.S.S. Yorktown, a national landmark located at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, the toddler playground kicked off a series of capital improvements to one of the most beloved parks in the region. The next phase of Memorial Waterfront Park capital improvement project has begun and will take 120 days to complete.
Shade structures, an updated security system, a Wi-Fi cloud, and an improved electrical system are part of the project and will enhance park activities and special events. To facilitate maintenance and preservation, the commemorative bricks lining the approaches to the memorial garden will be removed and the names of veterans will be etched on pavers near the entrance to the statue.
Pedestrians and motorists will find an easier way to the park with new wayfinding signage and access kiosks. Wayfinding signs will later be installed on Coleman Boulevard.
“We are excited to showcase our new toddler playground and we ask for our patrons’ patience and understanding as we proceed with the next phase of renovations,” said Assistant Town Administrator and Memorial Waterfront Park project manager Katherine Hendricks.
About the Capital Improvement Plan
The Capital Improvement Plan is a five-year plan updated annually. Projects are ranked by Council and funding plans are set in place and ultimately approved with each new fiscal year. As most projects tend to span multiple years, funding remains active and is carried forward to each new budget until a project is completed. The Town of Mount Pleasant is committed to funding major transportation and stormwater infrastructure improvements along with the continued effort to maintain Town facilities and other assets to create a more sustainable community for citizens.
