MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (April 26, 2017) – As part of the 2017 Capital Improvement Plan, the Town of Mount Pleasant is installing diesel exhaust systems in all its fire stations to provide for proper ventilation of diesel exhaust. The $200,000 capital improvement project is on time, on budget and nearing completion.
“Diesel exhaust in firehouses is a problem for many departments,” said Fire Chief Herb Williams. “A diesel-powered apparatus generates exhaust whenever it leaves or returns to a station. The installation of diesel exhaust systems in all our fire stations properly captures and prevents the exhaust from entering the apparatus bay thus protecting people and property.”
According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), many studies indicate that breathing vehicle exhaust fumes inside the firehouse can cause or contribute to serious illnesses. The Town of Mount Pleasant proactively looks for improvements to keeps its valued staff safe as they protect life and property in the community.
About the Capital Improvement Plan
The Town of Mount Pleasant Capital Improvement and Asset Replacement Plan emphasizes the Town’s commitment to its capital needs totaling almost $50 million dollars for fiscal year 2018. The Capital Improvement Plan is a five-year plan updated annually. Projects are ranked by the Mayor and Town Council and funding plans are set in place and ultimately approved with each new fiscal year. As most projects tend to span multiple years, funding remains active and is carried forward to each new budget until a project is completed. The Town of Mount Pleasant is committed to funding major transportation and stormwater infrastructure improvements, which combined are 85% of the total CIP budget, along with the continued effort to maintain Town facilities and other assets to create a more sustainable community for citizens.
