Posted on: May 4, 2017[ARCHIVED] 2017 Coast to the Capital Torch Run Relay for Special Olympics Kicks Off Today

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC - May 4, 2017 - At 9:30 a.m. this morning, law enforcement officers from around the Lowcountry began a 130-mile relay of a Special Olympics Flame of Hope from the beach of Sullivan’s Island’s Station 22 1/2 Street to the steps of the Statehouse in Columbia.
Appropriately deemed the Coast to the Capital, this event will coincide with relays from other parts of the state and conclude at a press conference on the steps of the Capital on May 5 announcing the beginning of the Special Olympics Summer Games. At 6:00 p.m., officers from around the state will join forces for a 7.5 mile run from the Capital to Fort Jackson where the torch will be carried into the Summer Games.
This represents Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics continued commitment to increase awareness, raise funds, and provide support for South Carolina’s approximately 25,528 Special Olympic Athletes.
