MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (August 18, 2017) – The Town of Mount Pleasant launched today an educational website to inform citizens on everything related to the 2018-2028 Comprehensive Plan initiative. Located on the homepage of the town website at www.tompsc.com, the Comprehensive Plan Spotlight ensures that information is readily available to the public.
The Comprehensive Plan process gives citizens, business owners, and property owners in the Mount Pleasant Planning Area a chance to have a direct say in what Mount Pleasant will look like in the future.
In July 2017, the Town launched its Plan Forum survey to select Plan Forum members who will serve as citizen liaisons throughout the process, sharing ideas and feedback on the developing Comprehensive Plan.
At their August 15 special meeting, the Planning Commission examined 275 applications and selected 64 applicants for further consideration. The commissioners reviewed these applicants independently and selected their top three from each of nine neighborhoods (see map). After tabulating the votes, the Planning Commission unanimously voted to select 34 Planning Forum members. The list is available in the Comprehensive Plan Spotlight at www.tompsc.com.
“We would like to thank the 275 civic-minded individuals who submitted their applications for consideration in the Planning Forum. While the slots are limited, the opportunities to weigh in on the Comprehensive Plan are not,” said Principal Planner Liz Boyles. “As this comprehensive planning process begins, there will be multiple opportunities for you to share your thoughts and opinions and we encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to participate.”
“The Plan Forum will hold its first meeting on September 19, with the first Open House planned for October 2017,” added Liz Boyles “We will update the website weekly with current happenings, and postings of upcoming meetings. Sign up for “Notify Me” to be sure to get all notifications regarding the Comprehensive Plan process.”
About the Mount Pleasant Comprehensive Plan
A Comprehensive Plan is a local government’s guide for decision making. It is created by studying the existing conditions of the Town of Mount Pleasant Planning Area, debating preferred future alternatives and priorities, and identifying practical implementation strategies to help the Town reach its preferred future goals.
There are nine required “elements” that every Comprehensive Plan must address – population, housing, economic development, community facilities, natural resources, cultural resources, land use, transportation, and priority investments. Thus, the Comprehensive Plan provides guidance for land development decisions, capital projects, and many other governmental decisions that might impact the future health of the Town.
In South Carolina, communities are required to prepare new Comprehensive Plans every 10 years. Considering the growth that the area has experienced over the past several years, Town Council decided to move the process up a year, to help town government identify and address its greatest needs.
