MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (May 14, 2018) – The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department is excited to announce the inaugural Court Queens 3-on-3 Women’s Basketball Tournament to be held Saturday, June 23, 2018, at the Park West Gym.
This will be the first women’s 3-on-3 tournament hosted by the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department. Terri Steed, Basketball & Volleyball Athletic Coordinator for MPRD, sees this as a great way to increase interest in women’s basketball. “There’s plenty of interest in the area, and this tournament is just one way in which we hope to continue building enthusiasm for women’s basketball in Mount Pleasant,” said Steed.
Steed says the tournament will consist of a maximum of eight teams, with four players on each team. Games will be played on a half court with a twelve-second shot clock and will last twenty minutes. All participating teams are guaranteed to play three games. “The combination of the half court size and twelve-second shot clock make for a faster pace than traditional tournament formats. There should be very little stalling or standing around in this tournament,” said Steed.
Steed has seen interest in this game format growing at the local, national and even international level. Most notably, the International Olympic Committee voted this past June to include men’s and women’s 3-on-3 basketball in the upcoming 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Due to this increased interest, Steed expects spots to fill up quickly and encourages teams to register now. “We’ve had a lot of interest in the community and hope to have a full roster going into our first tournament.” Registration is $165/team. Teams must register and pay by June 15th to secure a spot in the tournament.
To register, please return a completed roster (found HERE) and payment to the R.L. Jones Center.
