MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (May 16, 2018) – Following the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) press conference today, Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie announced a series of steps the Town will promote to mitigate the impact of the Wando River Bridge (James B. Edwards Bridge) closure on Mount Pleasant residents and businesses.
SCDOT officials have announced the bridge will be closed for thirty days, re-opening on approximately June 11.
“While this is a lengthy period of time, we recognize the need to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors. We understand the serious burden that has been placed on everyone by this bridge infrastructure failure; but together, we will work to relieve some of the stress imposed on our community,” said Mayor Haynie.
Mayor Haynie highlighted ongoing steps to help mitigate the traffic congestion. Law enforcement is stationed along our main roads overriding traffic signals to facilitate the flow of traffic. The Transportation and Police Departments are perfecting plans to manage and lessen the congestion. “We are working closely with local and state agencies to coordinate relief,” he said.
Mayor Haynie encouraged Mount Pleasant employers to consider a modified work schedule during this timeframe that allows their employees to avoid peak hours. “Stagger your commute times whenever possible, and carpool if you can,” said Mayor Haynie.
“Additionally, we recognize the economic impact on our Town businesses as congestion may discourage citizens from shopping, dining, or doing business in Mount Pleasant. We plan to unveil several marketing campaigns to support and promote businesses,” he added. “I urge you to shop in Mount Pleasant when at all possible to support our local economy.”
“Communication will play a vital role in helping mitigate this event,” said Mayor Haynie. “We will utilize all our communications channels to keep residents abreast of news and traffic updates in real time.”
