MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (Sept. 24, 2020) – Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie and Recreation Committee Chair Gary Santos, along with Town Administrator Eric DeMoura, Recreation Director Steve Gergick, and Division Chief/Athletics and Project Manager Matt Hansen today held a ribbon cutting for the Re-opening of the Julian Weston Tennis Courts in the Old Village at 330 Royall Avenue. The ADA-compliant facility includes three regulation courts with quick start lines for junior players, low level LED lighting and additional parking.
The courts are now open seven days per week, from dawn until 9:30 p.m. They will be used for open play, along with Mount Pleasant Recreation Department’s adult and junior tennis clinics, junior camps, and private lessons.
In 1965, Congress established the Land Water Conservation Grant (LWCG) to fund and match grants on federal, state, and local levels for projects focusing on recreation and protection of natural treasures like parks and wildlife areas. Originally built as part of the LWCG, the Julian Weston Tennis Courts have been a part of the Old Village neighborhood since 1979.
In April of 2016, the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department applied for assistance to upgrade the courts and received matching funds from LWCG. The department partnered with ADC Engineering to develop a design, and IPW Construction Group to implement the updates.
