Mount Pleasant, S.C. (August 30, 2021) - Owner Kevin Fay with Center Director Katie Melvin, together with Mount Pleasant Council Member Kathy Landing, along with Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce President Emeritus Chris Staubes and Director of Development Rebecca Imholz, today participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Code Ninjas, located at 624-I, Long Point Road.
Say the words, “video game” and your kids are bound to stop and listen. The owner of a new Code Ninjas, a learning center that debuted August 22 at 624-I Long Point Rd, knows that video games aren’t only fun, but educational. Code Ninjas will serve the local area by teaching children computer coding and problem-solving skills while having fun building video games.
The Mount Pleasant location is owned by Kevin Fay, a skilled IT professional that has worked in a variety of different industries including consulting, software, government, telecommunications, and financial services. After studying software engineering at Virginia Tech, Fay saw that coding provided sought-out skills that provided many professional opportunities. Opening his first Code Ninjas center, Kevin looks forward to giving back to the community and teaching kids the skills of coding, critical thinking and problem-solving.
“I was drawn to Code Ninjas because I wish I had something like this when I was a kid. This center is an outlet for kids to have fun, meet new friends, build life skills, and help open doors to their futures,” said Kevin. “The world and the Charleston area is continuously becoming more digital with expanding needs for those with coding and STEM skills. We want to be a part of the movement to help children in Charleston build those technical and leadership skills so they’re well prepared for the future.
Mount Pleasant children ages 5-14 can look forward to visiting the new Code Ninjas center to learn how to code in a fun, safe, and social learning environment where gaming is celebrated, and STEM is cool. Everything about Code Ninjas is built around fun, which keeps kids coming back. But the center also provides the results that parents are looking for, as their children gain coding and problem-solving skills they’ll need for the jobs of the future.
“Code Ninjas is a perfect place for kids to learn valuable skills at a young age that will help set them up for a successful future, said Center Director, Katie Melvin. “It’s amazing to see kids at the center show their parents all that they have learned at Code Ninjas and how they are having fun while doing it.”
Code Ninjas accomplishes this with a robust, game-based curriculum made up of nine belts, just like martial arts. The curriculum is self-paced, but not self-taught; kids get immediate help and encouragement from Code Senseis and fellow students as they advance from white to black belt. The program keeps kids motivated with little wins along the way, and “Belt-Up” celebrations where they receive color-coded wristbands to mark their graduation to the next level. By the time a child finishes the program, they will publish an app in an app store.
Code Ninjas offers a variety of opportunities for children to get involved, including a flexible weeknight drop-in program, camps, Roblox and Minecraft clubs, birthday parties, and Parents Night Out events on weekends.
