By Martine Wolfe-Miller, Communications Officer

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (October 7, 2011) – The 2011 season of the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market will conclude in less than two weeks. Now is the perfect time to stock up on your favorite produce or baked goods!

“With the summer growing season coming to an end it is a good time to stock up on your favorite summer crops. Whether you pickle it, can it, freeze it, or just want to eat your favorite summer treat while you can, come visit the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market and enjoy the fall harvest. We would like to thank all our farmers, vendors and patrons for supporting the market and making this season the best one yet!” said Farmers Market Manager Tracy Richter.

She suggested the following five tips to stock up on produce, save money and eat local until next spring:

1. Identify Your NeedsThink about what you like to eat and stock up on those items. Potatoes, for example, as these are a basic staple in most kitchens and easily store into the winter.

2. Assess Your StorageTake a look at what type of storage you have available at home since this will determine what and how much you should buy. Storing potatoes in double brown grocery bags works well.

3. Think DehydrationLimited on storage space? Try dehydrating as a space-efficient food preservation technique. Dehydrating works great for stocking up on herbs.

4. Gather Farmer AdviceAsk your local farmers what works best for storage. Some tomatoes, for example, are better for canning while others are meant to be eaten fresh.

5. Cook up Winter CreativityUse the slower winter months to experiment with new ways to prepare your produce. For example, try pureeing vegetables such as cauliflower or turnips for a creamy soup base.

“Plan to spend a couple of hours exploring the market’s treasure trove of fruits, vegetables, preserves, dips, breads, pies, and other treats,” added Richter. “Enjoy our live music and free children’s activities.”

Farmers will include Owl's Nest Plantation, Freeman Farms, Joseph Fields Farm, J. Mac Produce, Fields Farm, Freeman Produce Market, Boone Hall Farms, and Moss Hill Farms.

Food vendors will include Roots Ice Cream, Great Harvest Bread Company, Great Foods Co-op, Rio Bertolini's Fresh Pasta, Pickle Works, Rina's Kitchen, Southern Comfort BBQ Sauce, Charleston Spice Company, Charleston Festival Foods, T&T Kettle Korn, CUP, Mount Pleasant Seafood, Mike's Hot Boiled Peanuts, Olinda Olives, Charleston Artisan Cheesehouse and Charleston Bay Gourmet.

The market supports the SC Department of Agriculture Certified SC Grown Program. Leashed dogs are welcome. Admission is free and plenty of free parking is available at Moultrie Plaza. The market is open every Tuesday at 3:30 pm until dusk. The season extends from April 12 to October 18. For more information about the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market, visit us online at, on Facebook at “The Town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina,” or call Tracy Richter at (843) 884-8517.
